The Circular Kitchen is the latest in culinary concepts - a complete, self-contained kitchen that can be installed anywhere. The brainchild of New Zealand-based designer Alfred Averbeck, the kitchen takes up about 18 square feet - perfect for the space-challenged New York flat. And since it has doors, you can let the dishes pile up with impunity. Averbeck calls it the "CleverKitchen" - and is it ever. Tricked out with sink, fridge, microwave/oven, stovetop and dishwasher, the mod mess hall can be jazzed up with an under-the-cupboard coffee station and comes in an array of colors. It retails from $6,500 - up to $15,000 with high-end appliances. (Note to the fellas: Averbeck is working on a version designed just for men.)
The kitchen is available only in Europe, although Birgit Averbeck, Alfred's wife and partner, e-mails that they're looking for investors to help them bring it to the U.S. |

After centuries of conventional kitchen design, the self-contained circular kitchen challenges many of the notions of a normal kitchen, treating it more as an appliance than a dedicated, inflexible room. It can be easily added or relocated to any space, be it apartment, office, holiday home or factory and comes complete with all the facilities and storage space of a conventional kitchen. There are no conventional cupboard doors, so access to the kitchen’s various components is by rotating the central unit through 180 degrees, or the top unit which rotates through 360 degrees.
